Reset Your Nest Community: Meet the Peterson Family

Updated: Feb 28

I am so excited about our upcoming Reset Your Nest community project. Last year we were able to organize an entire house for Candice Myer's family. Seeing organizers and a community come together was incredibly inspiring and something that we hope to continue to do very regularly at Reset Your Nest moving forward.

Meet the Peterson Family

Mikey and Karie Peterson and their two children have been through many challenges. Mikey has ongoing health challenges and last year their home caught fire. Even though their house caught fire, the Peterson family considers themselves lucky because they and their children were safely out of the house at the time, and the fire didn’t spread too far. However, the fire did spread to the garage which created and extra tricky situation as the garage had been filled with a number of things already needing some organization. When the garage was repaired, Karie felt a great deal of overwhelm at the thought of getting the garage organized in addition to the daily stresses connected to Mikey's health challenges.

If ever there was a project for Reset Your Nest, this is it! We are so excited to reset the Peterson's garage and we are doing it in just a short few weeks. Their garage has been a source of stress since it was repaired.

The house fire was a minor inconvenience compared to the hardships they have already endured with Mikey’s ongoing medical issues. In addition to receiving a kidney autotransplant and managing ulcerative colitis, arthritis, and bulging discs, Mikey has had brain surgery to alleviate pain from a Chiari malformation, a condition where a person’s brain outgrows the space in the skull. Although surgery has helped, Mikey continues to face symptoms including nausea, balance issues, migraines, depression, anxiety, and nerve pain.

Mikey remains upbeat despite daily pain and never-ending medical appointments. Mikey is unable to work but never stops being a supportive husband to Karie, an elementary school teacher, and a super-dad to Stockton and Meg, their two children.

Through this volunteer project, Reset Your Nest plans to completely transform the Petersons’ garage and we hope to raise additional funds to help the Petersons with continued medical bills as well.

How Reset Your Nest Will Help

We came across the Peterson family when our project manager, Amy Asay, met with them for a consultation for their garage. As she learned more about their story and their financial situation, she nominated them for the Community Give Back to receive our services.

The Petersons hope to be able to regain their space that was damaged in the fire. After the fire and during the remodel, the garage became a storage/drop zone for everything. They want to be able to use the items in their garage and to be able to easily find what they need. They want to be able to store bikes and the lawn mower and fun toys for the kids and have it not be a burden on Mikey to access the items.

Our goal is to set up easy systems to maintain. With Mikey’s limited mobility, we want items they use or would like to use more to be easily accessible. We hope when we are done, that the Petersons won’t feel overwhelmed when entering their garage.
